IF I WERE ANOTHER
Vantage Point Sharjah 12 opens September 28.
The 12th Vantage Point Sharjah, an annual photography exhibition by Sharjah Art Foundation, opens on September 28. From the title of a poem by Mahmoud Darwish, this year’s theme, If I Were Another, addresses intimate individual experiences and the weight of collective memory, proposing empathy as the lens through which we see others who hold different identities, histories and sensibilities. Five emerging photographers, selected through an open call, will showcase their work in a group exhibition at Bait Obaid Al Shamsi. The featured photographers at last year’s exhibition were selected from 350 applicants. Shown there was this image by Egyptian photographer Mohamed Mahdy. He documented the displacement of Alexandria’s fishing community and the generational impact of urban redevelopment. An elegy to a communal way of life on the cusp of disappearing.
